Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that West Ham are considering signing Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo – a player who was recently offered to Premier League champions Manchester City.
Grimaldo, 26, joined Benfica in January 2016 from Barcelona’s academy and has since become a mainstay of the Portuguese side. In just over six years, he has registered a whopping 247 outings for Benfica.
Solid defensively, Grimaldo registered 19 goals and 50 assists on the left side of the defence. A real talent, but a player who is also in the last 12 months of his contract with Benfica. The La Liga NOS team will be keen to sell.
Clearly, he’s not signing a new contract and Benfica won’t want to lose him on a free kick. A report from the i claims Manchester City have been offered Grimaldo, with a fee of £15m said to be enough for the defender.
However, City may not be the only Premier League club following his signing. Jones claims West Ham are keen, but he is just one of many targets the Hammers are considering. Some interesting weeks ahead.
“I know they really like Alex Grimaldo. Linked with Man City. He’s one of the best names they’ve looked at. There will be others too. Maybe that’s part of the problem. They take on too many players at once and end up with no one.
West Ham considering Grimaldo: Also offered to Manchester City
West Ham have had a great summer so far. Two real signals of intent from Moyes to land Nayef Aguerd and Gianluca Scamacca – the latter, Italy’s starting striker. West Ham have beaten PSG to nab their signature.
So if they were to continue in the same vain, Grimaldo would be the next perfect addition. The Hammers need a left-back; Aaron Cresswell now well into his thirties and Arthur Masuaku joining Besiktas on a loan to buy.
For £15m, and still just £26, West Ham would be hard pressed to bring in a better left-back. The problem they have is that, should Manchester City call, a move alongside Pep Guardiola might prove too tempting.
Former sports director of Benfica, now at Roma, Tiago Pinto asserted himself in 2021: “one of the five best left-backs in Europe”.
