New Delhi: Penguin Random House India has commissioned the first-ever comprehensive biography of President Draupadi Murmu, to be written by Bhubaneswar-based senior journalist Sandeep Sahu.
Madam Speaker: A biography of Draupadi Murmu, the book is set to open a window into the life of India’s first female tribal president and is due for release in late 2022, the publishing house said in a statement .
“Draupadi Murmu’s long and turbulent political journey is a story of true admiration, perseverance and inspiration. The first authentic and definitive account of the 15th President of India, Madam President, will unfold the many trials and tribulations and early years of struggle that made her the revered leader she is today. Beginning as a councilor in the civic body of Rairangpur and culminating in Rashtrapati Bhavan, this promises to be a compelling read; especially since this biography is the first authentic and definitive account of his political career. The grace and courage with which she led her public life throughout her career, although she was struck by a series of tragedies in her personal life such as the loss of her husband and two sons suddenly suddenly, make her a resilient woman to resolve. His life’s work, through this book, will reach diverse audiences far and wide, influencing many to dream their dreams and achieve them,” he said.
Murmu’s phenomenal rise from a sleepy village in the predominantly tribal Mayurbhanj district of Odisha to Rashtrapati Bhavan presents a fascinating study of democratic empowerment in India. It has several firsts to its credit. She was the first woman from her region to become a minister in the government of Odisha. She was the first female legislator to win the coveted Nilakantha Award as the best legislator in the Odisha Assembly. She was the first female – and the first tribal – Governor of Jharkhand. And now the first tribal woman to hold the highest constitutional office.
Sandeep Sahu, the author of the book, said, “What made the prospect of doing the book when Penguin India reached out to me was the fact that the book would be about the first tribal woman to become president. of India, which is truly historic. The fact that she is from the predominantly tribal district of Mayurbhanj in Odisha, where I spent my entire teenage years, was also another tempting factor to come to terms with it. It was an absolute pleasure working with my editor Chirag Thakkar and the team at Penguin India who have been very supportive and helped me get things done.
He has 35 years of experience behind him and is one of the very few journalists in the state who write in Odia, Hindi and English. He has reported for BBC World Service Odisha for over 27 years and has also served as Odisha Correspondent for Outlook from May 2018 to December 2021. He also writes for thequint.com, news18.com, firstpost.com and federal.in. He has written screenplays for dozens of documentaries, TV movies and soap operas in Odia, English and Hindi.
The book’s editor, Chirag Thakkar, hopes President Murmu’s election to the highest office will be a monumental stepping stone for many of India’s scheduled tribal communities. “Sandeep brings with him the kind of situated knowledge and skills of a storyteller that are utterly unmatched. It was a pleasure to work with him on this incredible story of a leader who will inspire generations to come as he has. says President Kalam.
Meru Gokhale, Publisher, Penguin Press, Penguin Random House India, said very little is known about his life. “His rise to the national stage as a role model for all Indians, holding the highest office in the country, is a powerful message for the tribal communities of India. We are proud to publish the first ever comprehensive biography of President Murmu,” she added.
