Tottenham Hotspur were heavily linked with a transfer of Roma attacking midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo during the summer transfer window.
Antonio Conte was keen to sign the player at the start of the season but Spurs failed to agree a deal with Roma.
Reliable journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has now revealed that Tottenham wanted to sign the player in a swap or loan deal over the summer and Roma were unwilling to let him go on those terms.
The Italian journalist once again looked into the rumors linking the player to Arsenal at the end of the season. Di Marzio believes Zaniolo is unlikely to go to Arsenal and the only London club he could join is Tottenham if he ends up making a move to the Premier League next season.
He also added that Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici have been long-time admirers of the player and that Paratici in particular has followed the 23-year-old since his move to Juventus.
Spurs could certainly use a creative midfielder in their ranks and Zaniolo has the potential to become a top player with the right training.
Di Marzio told Wettfreunde: “Nicolo Zaniolo only had one real request this summer and that was Tottenham. They tried to get him, but with a swap deal with other players, or a loan option, and AS Roma did not want to sell the player under these conditions.
“Now, like Leão or Skriniar, it’s about Zaniolo’s contract. They have to renew his contract if they want contract power if the player asks for it. Arsenal or other clubs? No. Only Tottenham can come back because Paratici is one of the caciques who have wanted Zaniolo for a long time, even when he was at Juventus.
