Reporter reveals Tottenham were ‘very close’ to signing Champions League ‘livewire’ this summer

A reporter has revealed that Tottenham are close to signing Napoli and Georgia star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia this summer, although they will now have to watch him shine from afar.

Kvaratskhelia has made an impression at Napoli since joining Italian club Dinamo Batumi in July. He started the Serie A season by finding the net against Hellas Verona, before scoring a brace in his next appearance.

The winger, who plays mainly on the left, has since scored league goals against Lazio and Torino to help Napoli climb to the top of the table.

It was in the Champions League that Kvaratskhelia gained a big new fan base. He tore through Liverpool in Napoli’s group stage opener as Luciano Spalletti’s side won 4-1 at home.

Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold couldn’t handle Kvaratskhelia and his better display earned praise from several pundits. Jonathan Woodgate said he was “magnificent” while Thierry Henry called him an “infectious” player to watch.

The 21-year-old was back on Tuesday night, registering a goal and an assist as Napoli beat Ajax 6-1 in their own backyard.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, who managed Napoli between July 2018 and December 2019, has given his verdict on Kvaratskhelia. He said recently: “It’s hard to predict today what they can do, certainly the newcomers have made the team unpredictable.

“Is Kvaratskhelia a surprise? For those who didn’t know him, we were already following him when I was in Naples. He’s a special player. »

The Georgian international became the target of several English teams during the summer transfer window. This is despite the fact that he has only just been to Napoli.

Tottenham and Leeds are said to have plotted moves for him. However, their interest did not result in a deal until the window closed on September 1.

Tottenham failed to sign Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, journalist claims

The Independents Football editor Miguel Delaney has now revealed Spurs are ‘very close’ to capturing Kvaratskhelia. Delaney also thinks the wide man is a perfect ‘livewire’ for Napoli boss Spalletti.

“Haaland isn’t the only compelling part of European football at the moment,” the reporter wrote (via HITC). “There is also an electric Napoli team, and especially Khvicha Kvaratshkelia.

“Their form is all the more impressive as it was expected to be a transitional season for the club, after the loss of so many senior players this summer.

“Rather, it’s possible that the rotation and introduction of young players like Kvaratshkelia actually suited Luciano Spalletti’s livewire approach perfectly.

“It is of course difficult to know if it is sustainable, and it can represent a real chance for a first title since Diego Maradona and 1990. But here, it is almost irrelevant at the moment.”

“They are there to be appreciated. They are essential. It’s also not like no one is watching Kvaratshkelia. Tottenham Hotspur were very close to him in the summer.

After failed approaches from Spurs and Leeds this year, he could yet end up moving to the Prem in 2023.

According to Georgia U21 coach Lasha Salukvadze, Liverpool and Real Madrid will both make offers to sign Kvaratskhelia. It sets up an exciting transfer battle between two of Europe’s most illustrious teams for him.

Meanwhile, Spurs have been warned to ‘watch out’ for a player’s future amid claims a European giant could swoop in for him.
