Centre-back is a position Newcastle United seem keen to strengthen over the summer. The club signed Dan Burn last January from Brighton & Hove Albion, and it has done wonders for the Magpies defence. Now it looks like Eddie Howe could be looking to repeat the trick and further solidify what has already become a formidable defense year-to-date.
Thus, Newcastle United have been linked with quite a few players capable of playing in the heart of defence, but the name they have been most linked with is that of Lille’s Sven Botman.
Botman proved to be an excellent defender during his spell in Ligue 1, even guiding them to a league title against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2020/21 season.
So, it’s not hard to see why Newcastle United might be interested in signing him and there’s an update on the situation from journalist Pete O’Rourke. As reported by GIVEMESPORT, he said:
“They tried very hard in January to get him, but just couldn’t get that deal done. I don’t think the interest has gone away, that’s still a position that Eddie Howe wants to improve on this summer. and bring in a new centre-back, so if they can land a Sven Botman who has been high up on their target list, that would be a great signing for Newcastle.
“There’s also fierce competition from Milan for the Dutchman so it’s going to be tough to do, but Newcastle are there and still trying to do it. They’re hoping to lure him to St James’ Park.
Reporter provides update on Botman’s situation at Newcastle United
Botman is expected to leave Lille this summer. AC Milan are believed to have already agreed a deal to sign the Dutch centre-back and therefore, it’s safe to say that the Italian champions are the favorites at the moment.
The race to sign Botman is not over, however. AC Milan’s ownership situation is still up in the air and this could open a window of opportunity for Newcastle United to swoop in and secure a deal for him.
It remains to be seen how things play out in the race to sign Botman over the coming weeks and months, but it looks like there is still a chance for Newcastle United to bring the Dutchman to St James’ Park.
