The Daily Express’ Ryan Taylor has claimed Tottenham have considered a move for Pau Torres from Villarreal but are likely to opt for a different centre-back in a future window instead.

Tottenham reportedly made a bid worth £55m for Torres last summer but the defender decided to stay at Villarreal (Marca).

The 25-year-old was one of several left-wing centre-backs who would have been on Tottenham’s radar earlier this summer (Football.London).

It was even mooted in June that the north London club were prepared to use Giovani Lo Celso as a counterweight in a deal to sign the Villarreal star (Daily Mail).

However, Antonio Conte’s men eventually landed Clement Lenglet, who joined the club on a season-long loan from Barcelona, with the Frenchman set to compete with Ben Davies for the left centre-back role this season.

Taylor has now said he doesn’t expect Spurs to add more reinforcements to their backline before the transfer window closes, but has suggested the Lilywhites could tackle a centre-back from fame in future windows.

The reporter told GiveMeSport: “I still think Tottenham could get big on a centre-back, not in this window but in future windows.

“At the moment, there’s really no one who stands out. I know they looked at Pau Torres but they would have done this deal already if they wanted to.

Boosts web opinion

The fact that we made an offer for Torres last summer is proof that Paratici is a fan of the Spaniard, but I suspect Conte has doubts about how the 25-year-old would cope with the physique of the Premier League.

I also think that Conte’s willingness to relaunch the pursuit of Alessandro Bastoni next summer (or January) might have played a role in the club’s decision to sign Lenglet on a season-long loan deal.
