Newcastle United pulled off some big moves in the previous January transfer window. One of them was that of Bruno Guimaraes, who was brought in as one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history, coming from Lyon. After a slow start to life at St James’ Park, the player definitely established himself and was one of the best in the team towards the end of the season.
As a result, it is hoped that he can become one of the players Eddie Howe can build his team around for years to come.
Perhaps naturally, the Magpies have also been linked with former Lyon team-mate Lucas Paqueta, with whom he enjoys a great friendship.
Rumors had suggested Newcastle United had an interest in bringing the two together at St James’ Park, as Paqueta has also been a fantastic player in recent seasons and could potentially be a great signing for the Magpies.
Paqueta’s situation at Newcastle United clarified by a journalist
Although the rumors never quite died down, it doesn’t seem like a move to the Premier League is on the cards for Paqueta. As reported by GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jacque Talbot said of the situation involving the Brazilian midfielder and Newcastle United:
“No. He came to Newcastle to visit on holiday and I think it literally stems from that. He is friends with Bruno Guimaraes.
“I’ve been told from a lot of sides – from the club side and from the player side – that there’s nothing at Paqueta. He’s not going to Newcastle.
Thus, it looks like there isn’t much to the rumors linking Newcastle United with a move for the Lyon midfielder in the immediate future.
It was still expected to be a difficult move to make as well, as rumors had suggested that Lyon were looking for a transfer fee of around €70m to part ways with Paqueta. This would have broken Newcastle United’s transfer record. A decision of this magnitude would not have been wise, considering that the Magpies need to strengthen in several other positions as well.
