Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed Chelsea could make a move towards Tottenham transfer target Weston McKennie in the January transfer window.

Several reports from Italy in recent days have backed Tottenham to make a move for McKennie when the transfer window reopens.

Calciomercato reported earlier this month that Spurs continue to hold a concrete interest in the United States international and added that Fabio Paratici could be set to raid his former club again in January.

This was followed by a report in Il Bianconerowhich revealed that Juventus could decide to take advantage of the midfielder in order to free up space in their wage bill for their main target, Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo De Paul. The report adds that Tottenham continue to hold a ‘strong’ interest in the 24-year-old.

If Phillips’ latest update is to be believed, Spurs could face a challenge from Chelsea for the signing of McKennie, with the former Schalke man seen as one of several options on the Blues’ radar .

The reporter told GiveMeSport: “I’ve been told at the moment that Chelsea are eyeing Ajax’s Edson Alvarez, Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, Juventus’ Weston McKennie and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes. The latter looks ambitious.

“Chelsea have a shortlist of midfielders they are looking for for a priority area in January, and again in the summer.

“Declan Rice is more possible in the summer rather than January, the same goes for Jude Bellingham, but I think he will either go to Liverpool or Real Madrid.”

Boosts web opinion

If Spurs face competition from Chelsea for McKennie, perhaps Paratici’s relationship with Juve’s hierarchy would give the north London club the upper hand.

However, it remains to be seen whether McKennie is high on Conte’s wishlist given that other midfielders were more closely linked with Spurs this summer.
