Reporter claims Chelsea will hold talks over January deal for 24-year-old

According to De Telegraaf’s Mike Verweij, talks will take place between Chelsea and Ajax over a possible January deal for Edson Alvarez, with the Dutch club now ready to sell the young midfielder.

After seemingly skipping training in a bid to force a move to Chelsea on deadline day, the 24-year-old ultimately remains at Ajax.

To be fair, the Eredivisie transfer window closing a day earlier than many other top European leagues has put Ajax in a tough spot.

Even if they accepted the €50m (£43.3m) Chelsea would have offered Alvarez, they couldn’t have used the funds to bring in a replacement.

His contract until 2025 meant the Eredivisie champions had the final say.

As a result, Ajax have reportedly decided not to sell the Mexico international, despite the player’s clear desire to leave.

Was this the end of the Alvarez transfer saga? According to Dutch journalist Verweij, no.

Speaking on De Telegraaf’s Kick-Off podcast, Verweij claims Alvarez is devastated by the result but the young midfielder can still get his wish.

It looks like Ajax weren’t quite against selling Alvarez, who has already bagged two assists in three Eredivisie games.

“A winter transfer is possible. There will be discussions with Chelsea in the coming days,” the journalist explained.

“Now he just wants to make this move to Chelsea. If a club comes along who are willing to pay €50m (£43.3m) for you and want to give you €10m (£8.6m) million) net a year – he wanted to leave.

“He was pretty broken.”

As the report suggests, the Blues could restart negotiations over a possible January deal for Alvarez.

However, Chelsea also managed to identify and sign a replacement, albeit on loan, in Denis Zakaria from Juventus on deadline day.

Although Jorginho and N’Golo Kante have entered the final year of their contracts at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea may soon have to bring in replacements.
