Mexico sees ninth journalist killed this year, investigations are overdue – Deadline

The body of Luis Enrique Ramírez Ramos was found Thursday on a dirt road near the Mexican state capital, Culiacan. This is the ninth murder of a journalist or photographer in this country this year.
Although drug cartels are often blamed, not all journalists have written about unions, leaving questions about what is behind the deaths of media members.
In the case of Remirez Ramos, his body was wrapped in black plastic. He died of several blows to the head. Ramírez Ramos’ news site, “Fuentes Fidedignas”, or “Reliable Sources”, reported his abduction outside his home. He was listed as “Founding Director” on the website. Although his coverage of cartel activities was sparse, he reported on local politics, which is also a hot topic in the country.
The Committee to Protect Journalists said it deplored the killing and “calls on the authorities to urgently investigate this act”.
Friends of Remirez Ramos said he worried about reprisals as early as 2015. However, authorities say he never reported any threats.
Mexican government authorities have been criticized for their lackluster investigations into the killings of journalists.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has promised a “zero impunity” program, even though he frequently verbally attacks journalists whose stories he dislikes.
