Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be looking to add a new centre-back to the ranks at Old Trafford this summer.
The truth: United’s defensive struggles
This season has been totally forgettable for the Red Devils and much of the difficulty has come from an inability to shore up a leaky defence.
United have conceded 52 Premier League goals so far this season, more than any other top nine club and more than Liverpool and Manchester City combined.
So it’s no surprise that the central defensive department has already been singled out as a position to be reinforced over the summer…
The latest: Torres could be a target for Ten Hag
Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke named a man who is already on the minds of the Old Trafford hierarchy in terms of centre-back reinforcements.
He said: “I think ideally Ten Hag will be looking for maybe a centre-half; Villareal’s Pau Torres has been mentioned. And a defensive central midfielder will be needed with Matic leaving and Paul Pogba also expected to move on.
Torres has previously been linked with a move to Manchester but it looks like the Red Devils will face serious competition from Manchester City for the snap. According to fabrice romanothe 25-year-old’s €55-60m (£46.3-50.5m) release clause ‘will stand this summer’.
The verdict: reinforcements needed
Although they looked relatively well-stocked at centre-back when Raphael Varane arrived from Real Madrid for £41m (Sky Sports), neither Ole Gunnar Solskjaer nor caretaker boss Ralf Rangnick managed to fire the best part of the decorated Frenchman in his injury. first season at Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old has made 27 appearances in all competitions in the current campaign, while Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof have made a total of 74 outings, underlining an inability to find a stable partnership at the back.
Meanwhile, Torres has amassed 42 appearances this term for Villarreal, helping guide the Yellow Submarine to a Champions League semi-final in the process. The 25-year-old has been described as ‘extraordinary talent’ by former La Liga midfielder Javi Calleja and has lived up to expectations so far.
Pochettino for Rangnick this summer?
Yes, make arrangements now!
No, look elsewhere!
Boasting a Sofascore rating of 7.07, the Spain international won four duels, made 3.2 clearances and averaged 54.6 accurate passes per game. With numbers like that, he would make a superb addition to United’s ranks in a position where more consistency is certainly needed.
