Liverpool won’t sell 24-year-old this month, journalist claims

Joe Gomez will stay at Liverpool for the time being, according to comments from Peter O’Rourke on GiveMeSport. The centre-back has barely played for the Reds this season leading to speculation he could be set to leave the club, with Real Madrid claiming to be monitoring his situation (BBC Sport).

Jurgen Klopp was forced to deny these rumors at the end of last year. He said: “We are patient and I think Joe is patient now too, that’s the situation. I don’t plan to loan anyone out this winter, so I won’t be the driving force.

But nonetheless, the rumors that Gomez isn’t totally happy continued.

Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa was recently flagged as a possible destination (The Athletic). But O’Rourke today echoed Klopp’s comments, telling GiveMeSport “From what I’ve been told Joe Gomez is staying at Liverpool, he’s not going anywhere.”

This is good news for Liverpool fans.

Although Gomez has found himself behind Virgil Van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate this season, he remains a player with huge potential.

His time at the club was unfortunately cut short by injuries. He was expected to play a huge role last season following Van Dijk’s season-ending injury in September. But a few weeks later he suffered his own setback which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

As a result, we’ve barely seen the 24-year-old in a Liverpool shirt for 18 months. He is still young enough to be considered a possible successor to Van Dijk or Matip. But his career seems to be stagnating a bit.

It’s nice that it doesn’t move during this window. Liverpool are still battling on four fronts after reaching the Carabao Cup final. But with a World Cup coming up in less than a year and Gomez somewhat left out of the England squad, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see those rumors resurface this summer.
