Leeds United have missed out on the chance to sign Cody Gakpo despite the deal not being dead according to former Eurosport journalist Dean Jones.
Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed (October 10) that the Dutch winger is no longer interested in a move to Elland Road after being close to a move to Yorkshire in the summer.
It’s understood a move for the 23-year-old isn’t completely dead in the water, with Victor Orta still likely to be on the deal. However, Jones suggested that the chance to sign Gakpo has now passed.
“He’s a player worth watching by clubs looking for titles, trophies,” Jones told GIVEMESPORT (October 13).
“He is a serious player. He is also going to the World Cup and I expect him to have a good tournament too. He has started to make an impact in this Netherlands team. Personally, I thinks the chance for Leeds to sign him has passed and they will have to look elsewhere now.
Leeds are likely to focus their full attention on RB Salzburg striker Noah Okafor instead, who has had an electric start to the season for the Austrian club.
Calciomercato report (October 6) that Leeds are set to face AC Milan for the 22-year-old who has scored eight goals in 15 appearances in the 2022/23 season.
Missing Gakpo was always going to happen after his phenomenal start to the campaign and Leeds’ poor form. Okafor is highly rated but hasn’t gotten as much attention as Gakpo lately and could still be within reach for Los Blancos.
If Marsch can sign another attacking-minded player with a left-back in January, Leeds will have a fairly well-rounded squad to attack the second half of the campaign.
In other Leeds United news, a major Elland Road exit now appears to be called off amid a high profile Premier League chase.
