Guwahati, Sep 10 (PTI): Journalists staged a protest here on Saturday against the alleged assault of veteran journalist Banajit Thakuriya of ‘Asomiya Pratidin’ when he went to cover an incident recently and his subsequent detention by police.

The protesting journalists demanded the immediate arrest of the attackers and action against the officer in charge of Chandmari police station, Tinkumoni Bordoloi, who allegedly detained Thakuriya when he went to file a complaint over the incident.

Journalists from different associations wearing black masks joined the demonstration organized by Gauhati Press Club in front of its premises. Senior editors and reporters from nearly every media outlet attended the event.

Thakuriya was attacked when he went to cover a fire at a Commerce College restaurant here on September 7 and the officer in charge of Chandmari police station reportedly detained him overnight instead of following up on his complaint.

“This behavior by the police is not acceptable. We demand immediate action against the policeman and those who assaulted Thakuria,” said Gauhati Press Club President Manoj Nath and General Secretary Sanjoy Ray.

The Gauhati Press Club sent a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who holds the house portfolio, demanding action against the police chief.

Steps must be taken by the government to ensure that the media is allowed to work independently and that journalists can carry out their duties without fear or threat to their lives, protesters demanded.
