Leeds United fans were given a boost over the weekend with journalist Pete O’Rourke telling Give Me Sport that Aston Villa are now more likely to be able to sign Yves Bissouma than Kalvin Phillips this summer.
With the end of the season looming, Phillips is linked with a move away from Elland Road. Aston Villa want the England international. Meanwhile, there have been a host of other teams competing.
Villa has been a Phillips fan for some time. And with the Villans making big claims in the market, some Leeds fans may have been worried about making the kind of offer the Whites wouldn’t turn down.
Leeds have boosted their hopes of keeping their key men. They are now nine points clear of the bottom three after beating Watford 3-0 on Saturday. And it looks like they now have a fantastic chance to stay in the top flight.
Villa can still come and call. But they have also been linked with a move for Bissouma as his contract ends at Brighton. And O’Rourke believes the £50million-valued Brighton star is more likely to make the move than Phillips, as things stand.
“I think Brighton would be willing to do business for the right price. So I think for Villa they like Bissouma, and I think that deal is probably more doable than Kalvin Phillips right now,” he told Give Me Sport.
Leeds will focus on crossing the line before sorting out Kalvin Phillips’ future
Phillips and the rest of the Leeds squad seem to be enjoying life under Jesse Marsch. There is excitement about their current form. And they are not far from ensuring that they will remain in the elite.
With that, Leeds hope they can keep Phillips if they stay up.
Villa press on and sign Bissouma would certainly bolster those hopes of ensuring Phillips doesn’t go anywhere.
