Journalist thinks Frenkie De Jong will stay at Barcelona or join Chelsea

A well-known journalist has had his say on the current situation with Frenkie De Jong and said he believes the Dutch midfielder will stay at Barcelona or join Chelsea, not Manchester United.

The De Jong saga is now in its third month of speculation as United fans await an answer over the players’ future, with the club having already agreed a fee with Barcelona.

The Dutch midfielder wants to stay at Barcelona and even if he wanted to leave the club, he couldn’t do so due to the deferred wages owed to him by the club.

Chelsea have now become direct competitors to United for the signing of De Jong and are keen to sign the midfielder this summer.

Chelsea, in some ways, would also have the upper hand over United in pursuit of the player due to the fact that they have Champions League football next season and United don’t.

United have their own appeals for the player though with Erik Ten Hag, a manager they know well, at the helm.

However, according to Paul Hirst of Times Sport, “Manchester United have identified Frenkie de Jong as the ideal midfield player. It now seems likely that he will stay at Barcelona or join Chelsea.”
