Liverpool ‘will only sign a midfielder if one of their long-term targets becomes available’ this summer, say sky sports senior reporter Melissa Reddy.
Although some fans and pundits claim the Reds look short in midfield, Jurgen Klopp’s transfer side will only act if the right player shows up this summer.
Liverpool lost a number of players to injury at the start of the season, most notably midfielder Thiago Alcantara will be missing for around four to six weeks.
Keepers like Edouard Mendy should ignore the boss and just kick the ball
Klopp recently admitted they could return to the transfer window this summer after suffering a number of injuries – but Reddy insists they won’t act unless it’s for one of their long-term goals.
Reddy said on sky sports: “Liverpool will only sign a midfielder if one of their long-term targets becomes available in this window and at a cost that matches their valuation of that player. We have seen with Luis Diaz that they have offered this agreement to get him over the line Liverpool are not panicking about buying or buying players for fun.
The sky sports The journalist added: “I think in terms of transfers, Jurgen always made it clear that in an ideal situation you would solve all your problems in the market.
“There are question marks over the midfield – do they have enough availability there? He always said that if the right player was there and the time was right, with the right finances, Liverpool would act.
“I have to say with their recruiting team, with the ownership, there is collaboration and they generally all agree on things. Jurgen has always been quite candid saying that his responsibility is for the team, for the results, for the behind-the-scenes staff, but also for the finances and to make sure the club is healthy. These decisions and choices are over his head and he will never try to undermine that in any way. He will find solutions on the training ground if the player he wants is not available.
“We have already spoken several times about sky sports on the long-term goals they have considered in midfield – Jude Bellingham, for example.
“I know they like Enzo Fernandez, who just moved to Benfica, and they’re watching him. They liked Ryan Gravenberch, who was at Ajax and moved to Bayern Munich.
“So the club is always scouting, always on the lookout and when the right player is available I have no doubt he will act.”
Reddy continued: “Liverpool have options in their squad right now, but their injury issues are all coming at the same time. Availability is something Liverpool look at so carefully when recruiting. We are talking about improving their midfield in the future and that will be one of the main things to do.
“Ensuring that those they bring will be players who have the strength to be available for games – that’s a vital ability that is often overlooked in football.”
