EXCLUSIVE: Here is the first trailer for the explosive documentary by American filmmaker Matt Sarnecki The murder of a journalist ahead of its international premiere as part of a special screening at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic this week.
The film explores the events surrounding the brutal murder of Slovak investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnirova at their home in 2018.
The film had its world premiere at HotDocs Toronto in May, but its KVIFF screening marks an important date on its festival run as it is the first time it will be publicly screened in Central Europe, where the matter remains. sensitive.
Kuciak’s murder sparked the biggest street protests in Slovakia in its post-communist history and also reverberated in neighboring countries like the Czech Republic.
The case took an unexpected turn when a mysterious source leaked the police file to Kuciak’s colleagues, to reveal a corruption network linking corrupt oligarchs, judges and law enforcement officials.
Romanian-based American director Sarnecki is also the lead producer of the investigative reporting collective The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). His previous works include Kill Pavel on the murder of investigative journalist Pavel Sheremet in Kyiv in 2016.
The film is produced by Danish producer Signe Byrge Sørensen of Final Cut for Real, the Copenhagen-based production company behind Oscar-nominated documentaries such as The act of killing and To run away, in collaboration with OCCRP.
Tel Aviv-based documentary specialist Cinephil handles international sales.
