Brazilian forensic experts identify the remains of British journalist Dom Phillips

Brazilian forensic analysts have officially identified the remains of British journalist Dom Phillips whose remains were found buried in the Amazon after he and his guide Bruno Pereira went missing on June 5.

Brazilian police had earlier claimed that the killers of Phillips, 57, and Pereira, 41, acted alone while claiming no criminal organization was behind the crime.

Police said there may be more people involved in the murders. A suspect named Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira had earlier taken police to the area where the bodies were believed to be buried. The body was transported to Brasilia on Thursday where it was identified by experts.

Phillips reportedly received threats from loggers and miners while researching his book. The UN denounced the “brutal act of violence” even as police investigate the motive for the crime.

Police have yet to find the boat Phillips and Pereira were last seen in.

Meanwhile, the US government has called for accountability and justice while offering its condolences to the families of journalist Dom Phillips and his expert guide Bruno Pereira.
