The Blues are known to be on the hunt for several centre-backs following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, and Upamecano could be a potential replacement.

What’s the latest on Chelsea?

90min have reported that Chelsea ‘have been informed’ of Upamecano’s possible availability should Bayern secure the signing of Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus.

Thomas Tuchel’s charges are, ironically, also seeking De Ligt’s services but his preference is said to be a move to the Allianz Arena.

Chelsea are said to have an ‘extended list’ of targets and could consider signing up to three centre-backs this summer, with Cesar Azpilicueta’s future also up in the air amid interest from Barcelona.

Players like Jules Kounde, Nathan Ake, Kalidou Koulibaly and Gleison Bremer are also on the capital club’s radar and being assessed ahead of possible changes.

What did Jones say about Upamecano?

Upamecano only arrived at Bayern 12 months ago from RB Leipzig after triggering his €42.5m (£37m) release clause.

However, De Ligt’s arrival in Bavaria would naturally threaten his position at the club, and Jones believes it’s possible he could be an option for Chelsea.

He told GiveMeSport: “Maybe. His future is obviously uncertain and he is in a position that Chelsea need to fill. So there’s an obvious fit there, especially as he’s been watched by Chelsea for some time.

Would Upamecano be a good recruit?

In his debut campaign for Bayern, Upamecano scored seven goals in 38 appearances in all competitions, helping the club win their tenth consecutive Bundesliga title.

At times the 6ft1 ace, who is valued at £76million by CIES, looked slightly uncomfortable and out of his depth, but overall he put on a streak solid performance.

According to FBref, Upamecano ranked in the 98e percentile for progressive passes, 96e for progressive spans and pressures, 90e for tackles, and the 86e for plan-creating actions among its positional peers over the past year.

The £200,000-a-week France international was previously described as “tremendous” by Rio Ferdinand, and his unique combination of physical prowess and technical ability makes him an exciting talent.

There are still several hurdles to clear before Chelsea can close in on Upamecano, but he is certainly another intriguing option for Tuchel to consider.
