Welcome to the May 18, 2008 edition of Carnival of Political Punditry. I decided to comment on a few of the submissions again this week. I didn’t get to all of them, but I can tell you that there are some great ones, and some really not so great ones. Enjoy.

Economy
Matthew presents Project “Elected Official Accountability” posted at Conservatives and Normals . Com - The Blog, saying, “An attempt to hold elected officials accountable.”
This factual article will not go over well with Obamamaniacs and other liberals who hate successful people. NotYourDaddy presents Eating the Rich « Government is Not Your Daddy posted at Government is not your Daddy., saying, “The top 20% of earners paid 86.7% of the total taxes collected, with the top 10% shouldering 72.7% of the total tax burden for everybody.”
Health Care
Jose DeJesus MD presents Cash Before Treatment - The Crisis in Medical Care Funding posted at Physician Entrepreneur, saying, “Dr. Jose DeJesus discusses the unsustainable current arrangement where large payers, including government, insurance, and large employers have negotiated payment rates that do not reflect real healthcare costs. Those who have limited benefit or no health insurance face rates that often reflect distortions created by these large payers, and mandated but unfunded costs. Finally, Dr. DeJesus suggests some alternatives to the current situation.”

APH presents How McCain or Obama Can Permanently Eliminate the Gas Tax, Cut Pork, Help the Environment, and Save Face posted at Market Urbanism, saying, “A unique market solution to the federal gas tax:
John McCain and Hillary Clinton have both supported the idea of a “Gas Tax Holiday“. The whole idea of a Holy Day to celebrate the worship of socialized transportation catered by Santa Clinton/McCain seems pretty absurd to me. Nonetheless, they expect pandering to gas-addicted voters to pay off in their election hopes.
Unfortunately, such a gas holiday would burden the deficit, incentivize the burning of fossil fuels, and further socialize our transportation system.”
Laslo Weger presents Elite Economists posted at Outsider’s View, saying, “Knowledge vs. wishful thinking: no match. Both politicians and the populace disregard what they know in favor of what they want to be true.”

Looks like a full carnival, I’m looking forward to reading through the posts but right now I’m off to the Celtics game! Btw, love the description for my post!
Remember though, reality is simply a communication construct that allows us to relate to each other via the most common perceptions of the world. There is no such thing as one true reality as we all see the world differently. There is a common or average viewpoint, which most call reality but by definition there is no clear cut reality, or at least we don’t know what it is.
I appreciate your including my posts in this carnival, which covers almost any issue one could think of. As the issues get hotter (and they will), I hope your carnival doesn’t catch on fire. Keep up the good work.
Reality is not a perception, it is based in fact. Opinions are based in perception. That there are people trying to destroy the US is a reality, it is a fact.
What I mean by reality is a perception is that we all see the world differently and during the course of our lives we all compare our perceptions and this comparison leads us to accept certain views as truth. For us to know true reality, we’d have to be god-like and see everything all at once. After all, there’s no way to prove that all of us are not living in a matrix-type simulation or just having one very elaborate dream right now.
Reality is based on fact, but facts have a funny way of changing as history marches on. For instance, I was taught that Pluto was a planet, that it was a fact set in science, and now the facts have changed and Pluto is no longer perceived as a planet!
What you described isn’t reality, you described opinion. If we are living in a matrix or a dream, then nothing matters which makes blogging your opinions about the problems of this planet a huge waste of time.
Science is more theory than fact. Some of those theories are correct, some are not.
The reality is that there are bad people in the world and someone has to deal with them. If we don’t deal with them, they will continue to come after us just like they did on 9-11. The attacks of that day were not perceived, they were not imagined. They happened, that is a fact. Believing that it won’t happen again doesn’t prevent it from happening again.
