Carnival of Political Punditry – May 11, 2008
Welcome to the May 11, 2008 edition of carnival of political punditry. I normally don’t make comments regarding the articles that are posted, but I think I will go ahead and give it a go this week. Some of them are so far out there, or so interesting, that I wanted to speak up. This is a day late because I spent Mother’s Day with the wife at the mall stimulating the economy.
We start with something that would be true if up were down, left were right, and human life were less important than convenience. Bob King presents Graphictruth: It’s not about “Right to Life” It’s about the “Right to be Goodlife.” posted at Graphictruth, saying, “This is not about moral choices, which abortion most certainly is and like all moral choices, one that must be weighed in light of one’s own beliefs and in light of the consequences one is able to cope with.
A choice that is made for you is neither moral, nor a choice.”
Chicks With Guns Magazine presents The Gay Republican #13 – Put That In Your Pipe And Smoke It! posted at Chicks With Guns.
This next piece has some very good ideas about how the new media can be used to put the servant back in public servant. Ashok presents What Is The Best Way To Use The Internet to Influence Politics? | ZardozZ News and Satire posted at ZardozZ News and Satire, saying, “I hope I didn’t submit this to you before!”
Current Events
Because you can’t have one without the other Jeffrey Stingerstein presents The 1st Amendment’s BFF, The 2nd Amendment posted at Disillusioned Words.
Don’t let the title here fool you into thinking this is a ridiculous piece written by a lazy jackass. This is well done and has a great point about how the people have let the government get out of hand. Michael Bass presents Getting out of Jury Duty posted at Debt Prison, saying, “You see, the founders of our country knew that the jury would serve as a fortress, protecting individual rights against a legal system which desires to propagate unjust laws onto its citizens.”
Economy
Phil B. discusses the problems caused when the government tells us they are helping us in Subsidies and Tariffs are Anti-Capitalism « Phil for Humanity posted at Phil for Humanity, saying, “Are subsides and tariffs fair in a free market?”
Michael Bass presents Why Americans Can’t Escape Gasoline posted at Debt Prison, saying, “Certainly our economy and way of life depends on our ability to go wherever we want, whenever we want. However, with all the technology on display today, our addiction to gasoline is a reflection of greed – not a lack of technological know how.”
The Whited Sepulchre presents Mandatory Drug Testing For Farm Subsidy Recipients posted at The Whited Sepulchre, saying, “the Left, Right, and Center agree: Let’s give more tax money to the wealthy !”
Health Care
Cancerkitty presents What’s up with this ‘Health Care is a Human Right’ Nonsense? posted at DelSquacho, saying, “An honest look at government health care and what it would mean to the average Joe.”
Presidential Candidates and Campaign
I have yet to see anything good come from this site, but Madeleine Begun Kane presents Next, They’ll Claim Obama Inherited Clinton’s Reverend posted at Mad Kane’s Political Madness.
More Obamamania for the Messiah when Evelyn Hunter presents Homespun Honolulu Endorses Barack Obama! posted at Homespun Honolulu, saying, “I’m no pundit, anything political I write comes from the heart. I’m glad I found this carnival because you’ve got some awesome information flowing through here! Maybe I’ll get an education after all!”
vjack presents The Politics of Elitism posted at Mississippi Atheists.
How do you bash on a liberal while still making John McCain look like a bad guy? Neil Benson presents Ariana Huffington’s Journalistic Role Confusion posted at SENSE AND NONSENSE, saying, “Polical, Social and Economic Commentary about the absurdities in our lives, written with an emphasis on humor.”
Chicks With Guns Magazine presents Whirled News – President, Candidates Address Gasoline, Climate Crisis posted at Chicks With Guns.
When Rose Rosetree presents Deeper Perception Made Practical » Does Satan Lurk in Washington? posted at Deeper Perception Made Practical, saying, “Does Satan Lurk in Washington? Quoting an under-reported comment by John McCain, then reading his energy field.” She manages to tell us that John McCain and all of the other Republicans are evil and she knows it because she can read their energy fields. No mention of course of the energy fields of Obama, Clinton, or any other Democrat.
When Shan Siddiqi presents Hillary doesn’t need economists! posted at Globally Rational, he starts out by going after Clinton for not paying attention to economists. But then he shoots himself in the foot by making statements that no respectable economists would ever say. I’m guessing this is another Obamamaniac.
War on Terror
Then moments later Shan Siddiqi presents “Support our troops” vs. “Support the war” posted at Globally Rational and starts repeating things that have been spit out by some main stream media outlets, despite the fact that they have their numbers completely backwards.
And then Danny Simkin tells us that we need to Talk to Hamas because as we all know, they are reasonable people who are willing to listen..

It’s a great carnival, lots of neat submissions to read!
Thanks for the comments. Just out of curiosity, what exactly did I say that “no respectable economists would ever say”? I’m not an economist, so I don’t claim to know the economy well; all I was trying to say is that I don’t want to vote for somebody who doesn’t trust the professionals. If I made a mistake, I’d like to go back and fix it.
It was this one “In the whole world, we see the best quality of life in the countries with the highest taxes; when the government has the money to provide universal healthcare and a successful school system, the people are happier.”
The UK health care system has people waiting in ambulance bays because they can’t treat them all. That is what government health care gets you.
And no respectable economist would agree with high taxes. No country ever taxed itself into prosperity.

The trackback didn’t show up or the spam cops got it. I just remembered and I had to go back and find you! I am such a bad person!
Thank you so much for being patient with my post and for not tossing me out the window!
I honestly thought that’s what happened. Shame on me!
I will go read everyone’s submissions. I’m excited to go read all of these.
How could I have forgotten?!? Life gets in the way, as usual.
