Hugo Chavez: The Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela Amazon Price: $12.24 Gott’s it is definitely not an unbiased and balance account, but it is one that would help you get the other view (although a tainted one some times). The book’s alleged factual information is not accurate and its narrations are simplistic many times. The book lacks research and depth. For example a key event like the Coup de etat of April 11, 2002, has a very simplistic linear argument with a lot of controversial interpretations of the events, just read “Venezuela’s 2002 Coup Revisited: The Evidence Two Years On By Francisco Toro” (you can Google it on the web). The later does allow the reader to realize how complex were the events that date and how much is still not clear. The Book editorial work was also lax, for example Heinz Dieterich Steffan is introduced as an Argentinean journalist, when he is German sociologist professor at the UAM in Mexico. This sort of mistakes undermines the book’s credibility. However, the authors close encounters with Chavez are interesting enough to make the book an amenable read. Not withstanding, Gott does have insight on the region and is not as partisan as to be blind. Many of the criticisms he makes about the region are in many respects accurate and he has been following the region for many years. He has also shown he can do better research and more balance accounts of the events as he does in his Cuba: A New History; were at its end he writes a compelling portrait of the unjust and difficult conditions for Castro Cuba’s opposition primordial organizations. Venezuela Travel Information | Lonely Planet Destination Guide Information on events, attractions, activities, and transportation for the independent traveler. Hugo Chavez: Oil, Politics, and the Challenge to the U.S. Amazon Price: $10.17 With all the criticism of neoconservativism (which is appropriate), it’s good that Chavez and this book bring up the issue of neoliberalism. Chavez accomplished quite a bit to educate the world on the issue when he held up Chomsky’s book Hegemony or Survival: America’s Quest for Global Dominance (American Empire Project) during his famous “el diablo” speech at the United Nations. Kozloff does a great job of laying out how the current regime in Washington tried to overthrow Chavez. There’s actually an incredible documentary about that event called “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” that can be found at a British Venezuelan Solidarity site. There are several books that are sympathetic to what Chavez and his supporters are trying to achieve. Our corporate media tends to ignore their socialist movement, or to misrepresent it. If his proposals were honestly portrayed, like his recent move to shorten the workday from 8 to 6 hours, Chavez would be inspiring people here to change the system of wage slavery we’ve accepted. Overworked American: The Unexpected Decline of Leisure It’s interesting to read the one-star reviews pro-Chavez books get. While I appreciate their perspective, my guess is that many anti-chavistas come from the wealthier classes who may not have the same advantages with Bolivarian socialism. They may even own the food stores that Chavez is saying the poor should not be punished for stealing from. That’s a quandary, and maybe they could somehow be subsidized/insured for their losses. That would beat investing in a massive prison system as we have here in the United States. We have 2.3 million people behind bars, and the number of prisoners and the costs are rising. The Perpetual Prisoner Machine: How America Profits from Crime As a little act of solidarity, I hope to spend some tourism dollars in Venezuela in the not-too-distant future Lonely Planet Venezuela ; and to share extra copies of subtitled progressive films with the people of South America. The Corporation In an era of transnational corporate tyranny, we need transnational labor, environmental, peace and justice efforts. “Full opportunity for full development is the unalienable right of all. So when I heard he had written a second book which updated his story into the present day, I purchased it quickly. It was like getting reacquainted with an old friend. You see Bruchko grappling with the losses of Gloria and Bobarishora. You see his spirit rekindled after hearing a couple of the younger Motilones speaking at a peace conference. You feel his joy as the nation of Columbia recognizes that 420 acres of jungle land belong to the Motilone people (truly known as the Bari people). The first 36 pages rehash the first Bruchko book, while the rest of the volume brings the story into the present day (with occasional looks back into the past). You get to read the details of Bruce’s entanglements with terrorist groups and drug dealers. You get his first person account of his brutal 1988 abduction by the ENF and his mixed feelings about the current direction the Motilones are taking. You get the sense that the younger Motilones want to modernize more and t forego some of the tribal traditions that Bruce has been trying hardf to safeguard. Yet Bruce is confident in the Lord that Gode will continue to raise up Motilones who walk in our Lord’s trail. If you love the first book, you’ll definitely want this one, too. But this is also a good place to start even if you have never heard of Bruchko. Bruchko Amazon Price: $10.19 This book was absolutly wonderful! Lonely Planet Venezuela Amazon Price: $16.49 Pirates of the Caribbean: Axis of Hope Amazon Price: $16.29 “Pirates of the Caribbeab” by Tariq Ali is a good introduction to the Bolivarian Revolution that is reshaping life and politics in South America. Mr. Ali provides an astute blend of historical, biographical and analytical commentary that serves to help the reader appreciate the significance of the continent’s challenge to U.S. power. In addition, an extensive appendix includes a short essay and interviews with key figures as well as reprints of speeches delivered by Hugo Chavez and Evo Morales, with the latter allowing us a rare opportunity to assess these leaders in their own words. Mr. Ali discusses how the corporate media has spewn a great amount of disinformation about Presidents Chavez and Morales who should be understood as embodying a mass populist response to the failed policies of neoliberalism. Mr. Ali provides short histories of Venezuela and Bolivia to show how corporate interests in the U.S. have for many decades allied with South American elites to exploit natural resources for profit. However, social movements driven by the continent’s extreme conditions of inequality has given impetus to political struggles that have culminated in the free elections of Mr. Chavez and Mr. Morales to office. In fact, Mr. Ali recalls the dramatic story of how the Venezuelan people rallied to the defense of Mr. Chavez during the failed coup attempt of 2002 which was engineered by the Venezuelan oligarchy with the tacit encouragement and support of the U.S. government. Mr. Ali enlivens his narrative with first-hand interviews conducted with Mr. Chavez and others during several visits to the country. Mr. Ali also visited Cuba to study and reflect upon the significance of that country’s longstanding revolution. While acknowledging many faults with the Cuban experience (such as the continued repression of free speech), Mr. Ali contends that Fidel Castro’s leadership continues to provide inspiration to others. Specifically, Mr. Castro’s dedication to revolutionary principles following the collapse of the USSR has shown that alternatives to globalization are possible. Mr. Ali goes on to discuss the special relationship forged between Mr. Castro, Mr. Chavez and Mr. Morales, including the key role Cuba played in ensuring the survival of the Chavez government when a strike by Venezuelan healthcare professionals and teachers threatened to bring many essential national services to a halt. A short biography of Simon Bolivar details the revolutionaries’ extraordinary life and seeks to show how the mutual support and cooperation between Bolivia, Cuba and Venezuela could be a sign that Mr. Bolivar’s dream might finally be taking shape in our lifetime. Interestingly, Mr. Ali finds a significant number of characteristics shared between Mr. Bolivar and Mr. Chavez, including a vision of South American unification, an opposition to empire, a recognition of the relationship between economic underdevelopment and national disempowerment, and an underestimation of their leadership skills stemming from their opponent’s racist beliefs. While acknowledging the immense challenges that lay ahead, Mr. Ali believes that the socialist ideals championed by Mr. Chavez could help inspire humans around the world to question the status quo and find enduring solutions to violence, economic inequality and environmental destruction. I highly recommend this throughly readable and fascinating book to everyone.
